Capstone Project

For my senior capstone project, I will be showing the group choreography that I have been working on. For my piece I am working with 3 dancers, Elena Cano, Daily Alire, and Georgeanna Vasquez. I specifically chose dancers with previous dance experience. I did that because in my piece, I wanted to have fun with it and let it be more 3D/dynamic than just movements in regular 2D personal space.

"It's On Again" is the piece that I choreographed for my capstone project. This is a recording of my studio performance, and I cannot wait to see it on stage at our Spring Concert. I got this theme while watching the movie "The Amazing Spider-man 2". The hero of that movie depicts resiliency and being headstrong about anything in his way. Considering the fact that we are now about to be high school graduates and on our way to college, I wanted to show how crucial it is to be like the hero in that movie. We are going to have rough times and not get what we want so we have to stay resilient. Because it is a Spiderman movie, I wanted to add in movements that are "spider-like" and show sharpness. Adding in those qualities made the dance more interesting to watch, and personally, I like fast strong dance more than slow and soft pieces. I was careful when picking my dancers because I wanted to add in two or three tricks to show how Spiderman moves. He leaps, jumps high, and does more crazy stunts, and I wanted my dancers to showcase that as well. I chose the song "It's On Again" by Alicia Keys which also came from the movie's soundtrack. In the song, she says "when it seems your faith has broken, by the second, losing' focus, ain't no way to get off unless you move forward." For people like us that are about to start a new chapter in life, it sounded very inspirational so my whole concept of this piece revolved around that. If I had the chance to further revise my piece, I would have liked to work with more dancers. Having more dancers would have made it fun to choreograph dynamic partner work that would help illustrate my concept more clearly. I would have also had the opportunity to play with different shapes and levels if I had more dancers. Lastly, I would like to create more movement where there are "holes" or standing parts. There are some parts in my dance where the dancers look somewhat lost or standing doing nothing. Because of that, it looks incomplete in a way.
